Dangit.

Nothing makes me cry harder than having to tell someone about Bunny being gone when they don't know.
They aren't being insensitive, it isn't their fault, but it seems to punch me in the gut harder than anything else.

I open my BIG MOUTH... criminy.

Remember this?
"The Galaxy Tab is pretty but locked into the various providers. Still no wi-fi only version… though I think I need the 3G/4G occasionally. Wifi is NOT ubiquitous, nor even common in lots of places I travel. I tend to live on my Centro at those times.
Of course, there is also the option of getting a wifi only tablet then changing my phone/plan to one with tethering. I quite like the Google phone and I hear decent things about T-Mobile. But I’ll probably use my Palm device until it explodes, whine a lot about that, mourn the end of an era for me, then get a new phone which I will proceed to love and squee over at length."

...it's what I said YESTERDAY...

This is what happened this evening (via Twitter):
- Interesting. AT&T just snail mailed me that my Centro will no longer work after May 15 and my rate plan is gone. Hello T-Mobile.
- I'm feeling very melancholy now about my Centro. Stupid AT&T.
- Right. Now I'll need android versions of my favorite apps (Hipstamatic, etc.) Suggestions for my soon to be Google 2 phone?
-The universe allows me strange luck; takes something away, gives me something to work in its stead (not Bunny tho) http://tinyurl.com/4jm354n

Oh little Centro. I wasn't ready to let you go.

AT&T... you freakin' suck.

Jan 20 / 2:17pm

Well @Maggie did it.

So I figured I might as well, too. Seemed like a decent idea.
Read her getting things in hand health post here.

Mostly, I knew that I needed to eat better (and I have been) after Bunny didn't need 100% of my time anymore. I know what I need to eat and I just hadn't been eating it. I can't eat like normal people. Wheat, sugar, soy... or carbs... kick my arse. I need clean protein and lots of it, veggies, too, but not very much fruit (my body doesn't differentiate between sugars, it just goes bonkers. And HFCS makes me high.). Tell those physicians with their little charts to stick them where the sun don't shine. Their ideas of a balance just does not work in my system.
So mostly I humored my doctor a little with the easing off of the cow protein (giant hunks o' steak work the best for me in terms of weight loss and my cholesterol went down even with cow, but I was also walking 3 miles a night), I haven't been to sushi (so no rice, less shrimp) in a while (primarily because the folks who bought the House of Sake are lying sacks of shit and changed everything that they swore they wouldn't. I don't tolerate liars.) and have been roasting a lot of chickens.
Roasting veggies, too.

I think what helped me most about her posts were the linkies to vitamins and supplements. Some of the stuff that she mentioned sounded familiar (I'm a stress-ball, too). Here's the chart.

Horseshorseshorseshorses

(FYI: the brand of my pill case is "Fit & Healthy" but if I was so fit & healthy, then I wouldn't need such a fekkin' huge pill case, would I? Sigh. I know, I've seen worse..)

The thing i don't like about the multi-vitamin I take (see blue horse pill above) is that I have to take it on a full stomach otherwise it nauseates me in a big way (I wonder if there is something in  there that I am allergic to... fillers and "inert" stuff that never seem to be inert to me. I'm a delicate flower, you see.). I don't eat all that much during the day, so its kind of a pain in the arse as well as semi-nauseating on a regular basis. Fun. On top of that, they taste absolutely vile. I'd buy Flinstone's, but they don't sell the "You're starting to get up there girlfriend, you need more stuff" in chewables. Though being dinosaur shaped would be appropriate.
Another item on the list is 5-8 walnuts a day. Easy right? Easy if you like walnuts. Blech. Pasty and gross, but I'm eating them. (I'm not certain how long I'll tolerate them - maybe I can find an alternative delivery system for their contents. Not necessarily a pill since I agree with the "its not the same in pill form" argument of nutrition.
I've been walking some, but haven't been doing it consistently. I messed up my left foot wearing Uggs outside the house (was that an editorial comment by the universe? possibly.) and its been ok, but twingy ever since. Once I get settled into my stride though, I can knock off 4 miles at a pop, so it isn't broken or anything, but it is pesky.
The weather was crap for a while as well... not just cloudy, I like that, but rainy and cold. This next weekend looks nice, so maybe I'll be able to get out on the trail again.

I'm also saving up to get an Android tablet eventually. I suppose it is in my best interest that I haven't found the right tablet so that I can stash away moola and have enough to buy it when I do find one, but I have a trip coming up and I would like to get used to it, get it set up and play with it before I go (and hopefully FIND ONE before I go. Industry, you are on notice. I leave March 3.)

I want one that:
-is 7 inch (sorry, the iPad is just too big for me in general)
-has Android marketplace (I am a little spoiled by the app store on Errol)
-updatable (either over the air or by plugging into my computer-but nothing too involved. If WordPress can do a 1 click update, these should, too.)
-NOT a totally custom Android OS (actually this is a redundant statement based on the items listed above.)
-A wireless connection that I can turn on for a month if I need it, but no 2 year plan commitment. Tex got the iPad the minute it shipped and was grandfathered into the unlimited 3G from AT&T (which he should NEVER turn off). I'd like something like that, but I'm not kidding myself that it will be an option for me.

Luckily there are lots of tablets pouring out of the industry's gaping maw at the moment, but not all are in production or on the sales floor. I like Archos, but their last efforts were more of a media player with an Android OS with apps that had to be customized all to hell to run on the machine. We'll see if they fix this in their latest incarnations.
Dell was promising with their Streak, but then they made you sign away your life to AT&T. Give me a break; AT&T sucks. They couldn't maintain signal if they had a cell tower stuck up their own butts. (Ever wonder why I don't write for online magazines anymore? Don't.)
The Galaxy Tab is pretty but locked into the various providers. Still no wi-fi only version... though I think I need the 3G/4G occasionally.
But I'll probably use my Palm device until it explodes, whine a lot about that, mourn the end of an era for me, then get a new phone which I will proceed to love and squee over at length.
I'm a Leo. It happens.

I got a new softshell jacket (water and wind resistant-good for the weather that we had for the last several months) but lately the weather has been rather nice and I haven't really needed it with the fleece or sweater I wear all the time to work/at home/running around. My brain has a curious tendency to forget what cold is like when it is nice outside, or conversely to forget just how hot things are in Texas after the luxury of cold nights and cool days in NorCal. So, my brain is saying things like "Oh we can wear this to Green Bay! Just needs a layer or two underneath."
Riiight.
Intellectually I know that 11 degrees is a bit too cold for this jacket, but my brain has its want that my rational side ignores. I just need a few days of 40 degree weather to remind my silly brain that it isn't the right jacket. We'll see if that happens.
I've put together a packing list, but knowing myself, I'll find something FABULOUS 2 days before the trip and rearrange everything to revolve around it.
Speaking of packing lists, I need to get my travel site finished, just haven't had the energy to do so. More on that anon.

I was looking at the adoptable kitties list at the 9 Lives Foundation to see if there were any kitty-babies that struck my fancy... and they all were cute, but instead of "Yay a fuzzy thing to hug and squeeze and call George!" I went to that place that was insane and utterly terrified about the prospect of leaving Bunny alone the last few weeks she was here. I was really, really ill for several weeks after she left. I pretty much destroyed my immune system with that fear and it comes right back to full force when I remember those days. (I still remember horrible emotions from 30years ago-I don't think this visceral reaction is going to go away anytime soon. Again, I'm a Leo. Deal.)
I'd love to foster a cat or take in an adult cat who needs it, but I know myself. I fall hard. Letting go of something tends to kill me. Or watching a cat go through that again... I'm not strong enough right now to get through that again...I feel like a horrible person for not being able to just grow a pair and do the right thing. However, I think my system would collapse if I did that now. Last night I was up til 3 trying to distract my brain from the horrible images that kept showing up when I had a bunch of Bunny memories surface unexpectedly.
I think I need to wait. I'll skip dinner out for a few weeks and write another check to help out since I am such an utter coward. And I'll just keep poking at that particular bruise to see when it doesn't make me cry.
I'll keep you posted.

Secret

Watch the sunrise
Say your goodbyes
Off we go
Some conversation
No contemplation
Hit the road

Car overheats
Jump out of my seat
On the side of the highway baby
Our road is long
Your hold is strong
Please don't ever let go Oh No

I know I don't know you
But I want you so bad
Everyone has a secret
But can they keep it
Oh No they can't

I'm driving fast now
Don't think I know how to go slow
Where you at now
I feel around
There you are

Cool these engines
Calm these jets
I ask you how hot can it get
And as you wipe off beads of sweat
Slowly you say "I'm not there yet!"

I know I don't know you
But I want you so bad
Everyone has a secret
But can they keep it
Oh No they can't

I know I don't know you
But I want you so bad
Everyone has a secret
But can they keep it
Oh No they can't

Carpe Weekend

Everything is just pesky lately. Not overtly bad, just pesky.
But like itching, it isn't pain, but it can grow to be overwhelming.
I really needed that 3 day weekend. I got some things done (closet floor-FOUND!, kitchen counter-FOUND! kitchen sink-FOUND! (then lost again after I roasted another chicken)) and then also did a LOT of sleeping and knitting and generally being a big lazy slob. It was nice.

A lot of folks in the neighborhood still have their xmoose trees up and I kinda like it, they look pretty in the windows. I took all my decorations down a few weeks ago, not out of grinchiness or even organization, just due to the fact I was rearranging the house (again) and I needed the working space. In the course of things, I found a tree type device for next year at half price and bought it. I also got a 6 foot tree duffel for storage. (The one i got is not 6 ft, but it is about 4 with a decorative urn thingy on the bottom.) I think this tree was actually meant to be bought in pairs and set out on your porch to flank your steps or door-I really don't need (or want) that much tree. Just enough for some ornaments and a lot of lights. It had lights on it already, but I wanted to replace them with LEDs of various kinds.
Last weekend I managed to get  "prep tree for storage" checked off my to do list. I removed the non-LED lights, put the tree together and put on 2 strands of LEDs to leave in place. I have a fondness for the old fashioned shaped bulbs (C9?) so I put a strand of multicolor on there as well. It looked nice, so we set it on the side table and plugged it in. We'll probably leave it up for a bit.

Tree

I might need to get a ficus tree (killed my previous one) and put it here with some lights on it for the bulk of the year or I might be tempted to just leave this up all year... and then it won't be a novelty during December...

I also got a couple of these little things for managing stuff that I don't necessarily need on all the time or even need on a regular basis.

Socket-profile-shots

DAILY USE ITEMS: I have lamps, speakers and other pain in the arse to reach items on a timer so that the only power draw when they aren't needed is what it needs to run the mechanism for the timer itself (and i need to double check some of my older timers that they aren't drawing more than a teeny bit).
FREQUENT BUT NOT DAILY USAGE: I have somethings on a plug strip so that I can just turn them off completely (judiciously arranged so that I can flip it all on/off without turning on more than necessary.)
LESS THAN ONCE A WEEK USAGE: Occasionally there are items that just need to be on for a little while, so I can click the little button on top of the Belkin socket and it will stay on for either 1/2 hour, 3 hours or 6 hours. I only ordered 2 of them to begin with, so I put 1 on the iPod speaker/charger in the kitchen and one on the tree for now. Really though, I'm not certain that I need these all over the house, so I probably won't get any more. Timers may be a better option for most of my stuff that only needs to be on only when I am at home.

I still have some things running all the time-like the fan in the kitchen window and my computer- but I'm working on getting myself to pay attention to what is going on electricity-wise in my house. Water usage is next; I grew up in NorCal so water conservation was beaten into my head during the drought years. But I can do more than I do now.
My power bill has gone down $5/month since I organized things a little better. I have never had huge costs for this particular apartment though. At most it was $45 per month, this last month was $35. But I live in a relatively reasonable climate, I have a gas stove, the building has radiators and so I lack actual heating costs. The hot water heater is also part of the building, so I don't pay for that or the water it heats. That is all part of the rent. I know that if I lived elsewhere the numbers would be vastly different.
The other difference is that we don't have Bunny's heating pad running 24/7 anymore.
(Frankly, I'd be happy to pay $200/month heating costs to have her back.)
Ahem.

On the needles:
-Tex's scarf

-various hats in widely ranging states of done-ness
-a giant grey wool cowl for me

Cowlswatch

The cowl thing is just going to be an enormous tube (no pattern) of grey wool to drape over my head and neck or pull down over my shoulders then put a jacket on to add a bit of insulation. It's going to take forever so there will be pics of it for quite a while on my Ravelry pages. I swatched it this weekend to see what kind of numbers I needed and  I'll cast on this week. Since its is so big and on a monster-long set of circular needles, once I get it started (and joined without twisting the bastard), then it should knit up reasonably well albeit slowly.

I'm also still having fun with my broke-ass iPhone and several camera apps (Hipstamatic and Retro Camera). The other day I was reading about some guy who went back to film because he was taking too many pictures-I think his reasoning was that he wasn't really paying attention to what he was taking pictures of and was taking hundreds of off-hand shots that he never looked at again. He said  wanted for his pictures to be thoughtfully composed and chosen. I can understand that, but I like this particular combo on the iPhone of the luxury of digital and the reduced ability to take thousands of photos so that I have to choose my shots more carefully.  Also I can play with lots of tools to build a composition I like.
The Autostich app (i used it for the tree photo up top) is fun to play with in combination with the Hipstamatic/Retro Camera framed shots. Just take multiple shots and it builds a big one:

Fun stuff.

We'll be going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium again soon (we renewed our membership again - donate too, please) so I'll take some shots there. Fishies move pretty quickly and it is fairly dark, so I'm not certain that the shots I get will be too fabulous, but I'll probably just change my subject matter and see what happens.  I also have an iPhone holder for a tripod so we'll see if I can come up with something interesting to do with that.
Here's some pics from the last time I went using my SLR:

I'll leave you with this fun fact:
I'm listening to Cleopatra on the drive to and from work (by Stacy Schiff on audible.com) and boy howdy, Cicero was a total weenie.

Happy non-Monday all!

Cream Gravy for the Biscuits

One of the reasons I like living in older apartments is that they tend to have gas stoves. This one is a little worse for wear but I love it.
Just add cast iron.

Winter gardening of sorts

Not certain why, but having paperwhites around in the winter makes me want to rearrange the house...a lot.
